Apart from rubber, for many years asbestos was an equal parts effective and popular choice for use creating gaskets for a variety of applications. Asbestos’ fiber strength and properties made it resistant to severe temperature and chemical exposure.
The Right Material Can Make All the Difference. Check Out The Guide Here
However, as we know now asbestos is not considered a safe material for use because of the damage its dust and fibers can have on human health. Once the hazards of asbestos became widespread common knowledge, a replacement was sought out. That is when compressed non-asbestos gaskets burst on to the scene.
Manufacturers found that other compressed, resilient fibers such as Kevlar and graphite were a safe and effective replacement to asbestos gaskets.
Two of the most common brands for non-asbestos gaskets, ones you’ll often see on the shop floor of Breiner Non-Metallics, are Thermoseal (Klinger) and Garlock. Between these two materials, you’ll find there is a catch-all for any application.
But, like rubber, some materials are best suited for specialized situations. Here’s how the different options from the top non-asbestos materials break down.
Thermoseal (Klingersil)
C-4201 (White) – The Klingersil White possesses strong resistance to hot water and steam as well as oil and other non-stick materials. Because of its properties, these are an excellent original equipment manufacturer (OEM) material.
C-4300 (White/Green) – White/Green is a good choice for catch-all applications. These gaskets have high heat resistance (700°F), chemical resistance and creates a tight seal.
C-4401 (Green) – The most popular Klingersil gasket, Green has a wide range of strengths and resistances that make it applicable in a variety of settings. Its properties make it good with high heat resistance, chemical stability, torque retention and also possess anti-stick qualities.
C-4430 (White/Green) – White/Green’s strengths are in the areas of chemical and corrosive resistance, high temperature resistance and creep resistance. This premium-grade non-asbestos material is right at home in the aerospace industry and similar applications.
C-4408 (Green) – C-4408 is created with an extra wire mesh support, which gives it an edge in high stress and pressure applications, as well as high temperature situations.
C-5400 (Black/White) – Black/White is one of the best gasket choices for high temperature applications, able to withstand fluid temperatures up to 725°F and steam temperatures up to 400°F. It also has anti-stick properties that make it useful for applications that require such characteristics.
C-8200 (Off White) – Thermoseal’s Off White is best known for its acid resistance. However, its properties make it useful for a variety of applications. With high temperature (400°F) and oil resistance as well, C-8200 can be used as a seal for compressors, manways, pumps and valves.
Top-Chem 2000 – Not designated by color, Top-Chem 2000 is an FDA compliant gasket with properties that make it superior at high temperatures, acid resistant and capable of withstanding large surface loads. It is also Thermoseal’s only product that has been Fire Test certified.
Garlock Blue-Gard
3000 (Blue) – The most popular Garlock gasket earned that place because of its wide variety in application and it is strengths wherever it is applied. Blue’s ability to seal, lower energy consumption and reduce waste make it best used in water and waste water treatments, boilers (it can stand temperatures up to 700°F), oil production, gas production, food processing and more.
3200/3400 (Off White/Black) – White/Black is highlighted by super sealing capabilities, low emissions and torque retention. These qualities make it a good option for power generation, water lines and gas production and delivery.
3300 (Black) – Garlock’s Black is most effective against oils, fuels, refrigerants and other corrosives. With temperature resistance of up to 700°F, Black is also well suited for steam/power generation and water distribution and transportation.
3700 (Light Grey) – Light Grey is one of the toughest gasket choices out there. It is another great option for resistance to corrosive or acidic materials but can also stand up to weather and ozone aging.
